I am an English teacher for Heide Trask HS in rural Pender County, North Carolina. We currently have 51% of our students receiving free lunch and 6.75% are English Limited. Being a poor county, with an increasing population, our funds are extremely limited. In addition, we have a very diverse social and economic pool of students. I teach a class for struggling readers who have not passed the N.C. Reading Competency Test. Many of them read on the 3rd - 5th grade reading level, but since they are in high school they have the same interests as other teenagers. Finding materials that they want to read as well as materials that teach them critical reading skills is my mission. The Scholastic Corporation publishes a classroom magazine called SCHOLASTIC ACTION. It is eye-catching, teenaged reader friendly and most importantly contains stories, poetry, plays, and reading activities that help enhance the struggling reader's comprehension skills and strategies. This would be an invaluable resource for my students this year and can be saved and reused for many years to come.
