The overall goal of this project is to have struggling readers, often children in poverty, build up a home library by earning books through a reward system. Young children who are involved in Reading Recovery at FPG Elementary are students who test below grade level for reading. These children often have not had a rich exposure to books and may not have books in the home to read. They are frequently self-conscious about their inability to read well when compared to their peers and may not always enjoy reading time. This program will purchase books for children in the Reading Recovery program that will be presented to them for special occasions by their reading teacher. Such occasions might be a birthday, a first lost tooth, reaching benchmark goals, or for working especially hard. The books will be for the children to keep, take home,and to share with their families. Research shows that children who have books in the home are better readers. Further, we hope to create a positive experience for the children that ties that feeling of a special birthday or a job well-done to success in reading.
