I teach advanced English and creative writing to high school students in upstate New York. Like so many communities across the country, our area has endured significant economic and demographic changes over the last couple of decades. Nonetheless, our families and students are resilient, determined and eager to make the world a better place.
My students are writers and readers who will soon enter the world of college and work.
They want to make their mark in the world, and it's my job to prepare them.
My Project
Our school district closed so quickly that we didn't really have time to think about and then grab everything that we needed to get us through this unprecedented health crisis.
I would like to give these books and photo lights to students to use at home during the quarantine.
I am using as many online and previously- assigned resources as possible while students are at home. However, it's not enough.
This project is allowing me to pick out specific books for specific students. I've selected some graphic novels, some YA novels and some bestsellers. Because teachers in my district are not allowed to assign work during the quarantine, these books will be mainly for enrichment. I'll also give students an opportunity to talk to me or write to me about their books.
The photo light strings are for a handful of students who are working on a graphic memoir project. The mailing supplies will allow me to send the items directly to students' houses.
