Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is a Dual Language school, where most students learn in both English and Spanish. We are in a south Seattle neighborhood, and all of our students receive free breakfast and free lunch. They are eager to learn and love to read.
Our students are racially diverse, speaking over 20 different languages at home.
We celebrate this diversity and honor it by doing whatever it takes to give them the best education possible. Our students are treated as family. With children from so many cultures in our school, our children learn acceptance of people from all backgrounds. We share our cultures and learn from each other.
My Project
Every year, the Washington Library Association chooses 20 nominees for the best picture book in Washington State. The feature that makes this award stand out is that the winner is chosen only by children. It is one of the few awards on which no adults can vote.
Voting puts power in students' hands and makes them feel important.
We talk about what makes a good book and different ways to choose, but ultimately, the choice is in their hands. This is an event my students look forward to every year. The books are all quality stories, some fiction, some non-fiction. This year there are several multi-cultural ones as well as ones that will teach empathy. All of them are books the students will love.
