My Students

My students are first graders at a Title I school. Many of them are from low-income, high poverty families. Each student at our school receives two free meals a day. They come to school with limited background knowledge across all content areas. Many also struggle to read and access grade-level texts.

We are part of a larger school community that emphasizes the importance and joy of reading!

My students love to be read to and to read to others. They depend on me to help them along this reading journey and give them ample access to texts they can read and respond to with independence.

The readers in my room range from two years below grade level (reading on a pre-kindergarten level) to two years above grade level (reading on a third-grade level)! Some readers quickly progress in their reading ability throughout the year, while others have a bumpier path.

My Project

These books will enhance the classroom library I have worked so hard to create for my students. When I add new books to our library, the students' eyes light up! Many of my books were taken home by students during the Covid-19 school closures. Some of my shelves are now bare and will need to be replenished for a new school year and new readers.

By funding this project, you will be giving all of my readers access to high-interest texts they can read and respond to independently.

The books in this project will reach my most striving to most thriving readers. The students will be able to enjoy these books as I read them aloud, they read them independently, or as they read them with their families at home.

The colorful photographs will entice even the most reluctant of readers. My students already love to read, this project will only enhance their reading experience!
