This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I am a fourth and fifth grade teacher in an urban setting where 100% of my students receive free breakfast and lunch. Our school is on a strict budget and unfortunately, most of my students live in poverty and do not have access to books to read at home for their reading minutes. Without the opportunity to read nightly, my students are behind in reading comprehension, fluency and knowledge of different texts. No books at home means students are not getting the reading exposure they need to be successful. I want to collect more books for the students to check out" and use at home for their nightly reading time.
My school is in an urban setting where the students do not have the ability or means to go to a local library or buy books for at home because of their economic situations.
The family needs to provide the basic necessities and therefore books are not a priority.
My students also have many external worries and I want to alleviate any worries they have within the classroom by making sure they have the books needed for reading.
My Project
Students will be able to read books at their individual reading level and increase their learning of reading! The books will be used in the classroom as well as allowing the students to take the books home to read nightly with their family. Students will read many different types of stories in fiction and nonfiction and develop a love of reading.
Purchasing the books will help increase my students reading ability and the comprehension of many different text features.
These books will also teach the students new things through texts and give them time to practice their developing skills through reading!
