My students need a level literacy intervention to have a strong foundation in decoding and comprehension. A teacher in my school has the 2nd grade kit and her struggling readers now are reading at grade level.
Our elementary school is Title I and our students face enormous obstacles when raising performance gains in reading and math scores. Academics are hard for some of the students because of the lack of equity in culturally appropriate literature, technology, and up-to-date resources. Especially, when it comes to unlocking the mysteries of written language. Low incomes students come to school with 10,000 fewer vocabulary words then affluent students. We need to bridge this gap and strive for equitable classrooms for all students.
Presently, they are not receiving an equitable educational experience to support "Balance Literacy" in the classroom compared to their peers in affluent educational communities because of the lack of books.
My students are thirsty for knowledge, collaboration, and have an amazing amount of school spirit. They are active kids participating in Run for the Arts, Basketball, Chess, Girls on the Run, Jr. Coaches, and Cheerleading. W.'s Jumprope, Hula Hoop and Cheerleading groups participated in the Annual Jr. Rose parade and were voted Most Spirited by the judging panel.
My Project
According to the 'What Works Clearinghouse' research group the extent of evidence for Leveled Literacy Interventions showed positive effects in general reading achievement and potentially positive effects in reading fluency for students in grades K-2. Another teacher in my school has the second grade LLI kit and it has done wonders for her struggling readers. She started at the beginning of the year and now 90% of her struggling readers are reading at grade level.
The first grade LLI kit would reach my 20 kindergarten students, 15 first grade students and 8 of my second grade students.
Imagine the percentage of students who would be reading at grade level by the end of the year if this was implemented.
Because my students are at a Title 1 school this foundation would be imperative towards their future academic success plus, they would be bringing these skills into their community. Please allow me to use this program to help my students read at grade level and use those skills to impact their quality of life.
