The biggest challenge I face with my middle schoolers is providing enough high interest books to really grab them, engage them, and teach them a love for reading.
I teach English Language Arts to all of our 6th, 7th & 8th grade students at my school.
We are a multilingual school and I am also the TESOL teacher (teacher of english to speakers of other languages). Many of my students are second language learners. We have a wide range of reading abilities and the best way I have found to bridge that gap is to have a classroom library that has enough high interest books to grab their attention and engage them. My students face many challenges and many do not have access to go to the library so I try to make sure that I have materials available to them in my own classroom.
My Project
My students need high interest books such as Percy Jackson, Harry Potter, and Just Another Hero to foster a love for reading. Through this grant, I will have the ability to put new high interest books of varying reading levels on my classroom library shelves. This will excite my students and help them to foster a love for reading. The more they read the more they will succeed. This will also help my English Language Learners to expand their vocabulary and build their knowledge of the English Language in a way that is at their own pace and interest level.
While I try to provide as many books as I can, trying to provide enough books for three grade levels can be challenging.
This grant will allow my students to really have choices to check out books that they want to read and that will grab their attention, engage their imaginations, and help them to be better readers!
