As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Many of my students are lacking in resources and come from single parent homes or are living with other relatives.
Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to leave their worries at the door, keep things simple and provide my students with meaningful learning experiences.
My goal is to continuously improve their working environment in order to eliminate barriers and focus on student growth and development.
My Project
Fourth grade is a huge transition year for students. The kids move from learning to read to reading to learn. To improve students' reading ability, we place a huge focus on independent reading.
My students thoroughly enjoy choosing what book they'd like to read, but they also love having choice in where they sit while reading.
The current problem we have is the only options are to sit at their desks or the concrete floor. Having a comfy carpet in the classroom, as well as personal seat cushions, will allow my students to have a choice in where they'd like to sit other than the concrete floor.
