This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
We all remember middle school, right? It was a tough time. But it's especially tough to be a middle school student who, on top of everything else, also struggles to learn in a typical classroom. At my school, The Frank O'Brien Academy in Ewing, NJ, we work with students who struggle with behavioral, learning, and developmental disabilities, and who learn more effectively in a smaller setting (only 11 middle schoolers!) with a different kind of rules. I'm the 6th-8th grade reading teacher for this program, and every day I get to work with the most incredible kids.
Despite coming from some really rough backgrounds, these kids come to school every day excited to be in a place where they feel accepted and cared for, and that motivates them to put their best foot forward in the classroom.
One of my favorite moments of my entire teaching career was having my class ask me for extended reading time, so they could finish the chapter of "Somewhere in the Darkness" by Walter Dean Meyers! My students definitely have their own battles that they fight every day, but they continue to push forward towards success. They're the reason I love my job!
My Project
I know that reading is not my students' favorite thing. Not even close to the top of the list. But sports definitely are on the top of the list-- particularly football and basketball. That's all they want to do with their free time, and all they want to talk about when they get a chance to chat with their friends. I figured out, then, that the best way to keep them engaged in reading is to offer them books about their favorite subject-- sports!
The Jake Maddox book series specializes in books about all different sports, which I firmly believe will help my students to actually want to pick up their books and read.
On top of providing some books from this series for my students, I'm also asking for chair fidget bands. Almost all of the students in my classroom are diagnosed ADHD, and having something for their feet to do to release some of their pent up energy while they are reading would be beneficial for their concentration.
