Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Students truly want to learn, they are curious and can absorb a ton and improve their skills quickly. The most important aspect of learning is reading. It is the advanced act of listening. A strong reader can learn anything; can pass certification tests for future jobs without classes. Strong readers vote with a better understanding of what the ballot contains. Strong readers ask good questions to seek even more learning, more information, and even new and different ideas. Strong readers become strong writers.

I love creating new lessons for students to better their reading, and using new strategies that aid their common mistakes.

I bring my trained dog to school twice a week so that 3-4 students read aloud to him in a room in the back of the classroom to practice. I read aloud, speak about ideas, and share the love of reading actual books.

In their favorite unit, The Holocaust, students learn about Nazis burning books and I have them wonder: What would happen if we didn't have books, stories, ideas, traditions, adventures on each page? Books are essential.

Students, more than ever have dealt with so much in their worlds that books are a great escape.

My Project

Students get paired up with books that fit their levels and a level slightly higher. They connect this unit with current events that are done digitally. Most students check these books out to read at home, discuss, and connect to any other current events of their choice. They do both a writing assessment and a project of choice that stems from this Holocaust Unit: family background research, countries and their governments, hardships of war, benefits or items created in war that we still use. What this particular unit does without just telling students not to bully, but shows them the negative and major effects of bullying, harassment, and hate.

This amazing project and unit shows a need for kindness, acceptance, and tolerance better than any lecture at recess.

Students follow a heartfelt story that they chose and ask touching questions like, "Why do they hate so much?" "Is this like the Gladiators we learned about in history?" "Why are people treated so badly?" In the end, the questions they ask they have asked themselves, and I believe keep in mind when working with, thinking about, and fitting into this world.
