One of the most important learning areas is reading. Without reading, a student will not succeed in any other area. One of the most effective ways to teach reading is to read aloud to the students. This is true all the way up to fifth grade. I would like some big books and accompanying smaller books for the kids to teach reading, fluency, and phonics. I teach a class of fifth graders at a school on the far south side of Chicago. My students come from public housing and homeless shelters. Many of my students are far below their grade level in reading and need this activity to help them increase their reading ability. I am requesting some big books and accompanying novels for the students. I plan to share them with every other class and grade level in the school, thus maximizing their use and effectiveness. In order to prevent students from arriving in my fifth grade class with a second grade reading level, I will use these books to help the other teachers make sure their students are also learning. Reading aloud is one of the most effective ways to teach children to read. It is absolutely essential for our students who most likely do not get that kind of help at home.
