Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
How exciting is a book with no expression or no pauses? Not very! My students need to read along with popular books to learn about proper reading techniques like pauses for commas, transition between character conversations, punctuation and the significance they play in reading for comprehension.
My students are bilingual and they still have not been able to master reading fluently.
They are all reading below their grade level and do not understand how punctuation demonstrates expression. Many students currently read in a monotone voice which can make reading quite boring!
With reading being such an enjoyable, affordable escape, I want them to appreciate reading so they can find themselves captivated by a book. My school currently does not have intermediate titles so as they go up in grades, choices become slimmer and slimmer in opportunities to listen to reading. I want to be able to help my classroom as well as other intermediate teachers provide classic books to our fourth, fifth, and sixth grade students.
My Project
These audio books will GREATLY aide them in understanding the proper way to read at their pace with the opportunity to rewind and listen to the page again if there is difficulty with vocabulary, pronunciation, comprehension, etc. These books are at various levels, of different genres, all of high interest. They will gain an enjoyment of reading while learning!
Audio books can be enjoyed year after year and with classic titles, such as Number the Stars that deal with topics such as the Holocaust but have relatable themes such as friendship, are memorable years later.
On a small scale these are books for their classroom in sixth grade.
BUT on a larger scale, this will help instill an enjoyment for reading and be able to enjoy reading in a different form, many of who don't know exists! This will contribute to a more fluent reader especially these students which already have difficulty because it is their second language.
