Our library is a hopping place with students excited about reading! I have different times throughout the school day for students to exchange books as well as having scheduled classes. My library is never empty of students! It's encouraging when they recommend favorite books to each other and I try to purchase many from popular series.
The majority of students tell me that they never visit a public library so our school library is their only option for books.
Our school is in southside Virginia in a very beautiful, rural area. There isn't any industry in our county. Unless you are a teacher or farmer work must be found elsewhere. We are a Title 1 school which means most of our students qualify for free or reduced meals. Accelerated Reader (AR) is huge in our school. It is an incentive program that requires students to read books and take a short computer quiz on comprehension. As students acquire points with 80% or better average on their quizzes they qualify for prizes from me eight times a year. It is wonderful to see how reading scores improve as well as they love of reading grows!
My Project
As a librarian I enjoy seeing each of our students throughout the week. I hold classes, as well as have open check out times each day. I like to see students enjoy being in our school library. I am fortunate enough to see many students excel in reading throughout the school year.
"Reading is the way to opening minds!" The bookmarks will be used daily for students to use for tracking as they read, as well as to keep their places in the books they check out.
The notepads will be used to simply brighten my students day! I plan on using the bouncy balls for a reward for students when they make their halfway Accelerated Reader goal.
