My kindergartners are beginning readers, young mathematicians, and early scientists. Many of my students face hardships associated with low-socioeconomic status. Often they do not have access to resources such as books, computers, and the simple tools that would allow them an engaging learning experience. They attend full-day kindergarten and are very enthusiastic about being at school every day and learning everything they can.
The kids who walk through my door every day are amazing.
They transform over the course of the school year. I teach kindergarten, the beginning of the elementary world. These kids are the leaders of our future. They learn about their strengths in school and set goals to achieve. What makes these kids special is their love for learning. It's a privilege to watch them thrive in the classroom and I am proud to be their teacher.
My Project
Donations to this project will make an impact on my students’ lives by providing them books to read at school and at home. It will give them access to literature in the home through our classroom library. Recent research suggests that a child’s success in learning to read is based on their access to literature in the home. I’ve always kept a nicely stocked library in the classroom, but I need additional titles to help sustain the students while they’re reading at home.
Do you remember the moment when you got lost in a book and felt like your whole world was the story?
It was magical. I want all my students to have a chance at that moment. I don't want a small classroom library to keep these students from that moment. I want to be able to provide them with books to read that will instill a life-long love of reading. I want them to become successful readers! Students who have the ability to practice at home will reinforce the phonemic and comprehension strategies we are learning in the classroom. Students will be able to practice their story elements with homework, tell the beginning, middle, and end of stories, identify character traits, and more. The key to reading success is to start early.
