I'm a librarian at a small school in a small town on the coast of Maine. While we love living here, it does mean that we don't necessarily live near each other which means students are always looking for ways to socialize. They love to gather in the library during lunch or any other unstructured time. They also love to help me with tasks in the library. It's sometimes a little overwhelming to have so many students asking if they can help me shelve books or organize. Many of these students are avid readers and rely on the library to provide most of their reading materials.
My Project
Most of my students are readers but some have trouble finding books they like. I want to create book and game pairings to feature different sections of the library collection. For example, I will use the game "Clue" to promote the mystery section, "The Game of Life" to promote the realistic fiction section, "Operation" to promote books with medical themes, and "Sorry" to promote stories of friendship or love. I'll use "Jenga" to promote our engineering section and "Monopoly" to promote our economics section. There are so many ways to use these games.
While promoting reading is my primary focus, a secondary use for these games will be a brain break for my students who crave nothing more than a few minutes of fun with their friends at school.
We frequently talk about meeting the social and emotional needs of our students but we don't always build time into their school day to make sure we really are meeting their needs. This project will help me do that.
My students already see the library as a community space where they can follow their own interests and these games will reinforce that and ideally, they will remember that their public library can be the same kind of place for them.
