My students need Spanish literature within the classroom setting to help them develop the language that is being taught in class. This will allows them to develop a love for Spanish literature.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This is my first year teaching 6th grade at a dual language school with more than 80% of my students coming from low income households. The majority of my students qualify for free and reduced lunches. Students begin their day in their homeroom classroom and learn the language that is being taught during that portion of the day (Spanish or English). After lunch, as a grade level, we switch students. During this time, students that received instruction in Spanish before lunch, will receive instruction in English after lunch. We are a 50/50 model school (50% English & 50% Spanish). Students are learning and being taught in both languages.
These students are eager to learn and obtain a higher education.
My Project
These books will allow my students to practice their Spanish language through literature. It will also allow them to successfully meet one of the requirement for the first few days of language arts. Part of the first few days of benchmark (ELA Curriculum), students are required to select a book of their choice and state why they selected that book. Even though all of my students will have access to technology, it is not the same to read a book on a screen as it is to hold it in your hands.
Having our own classroom library will give them the opportunity to explore a variety of literature.
Being that this is my first year at a dual language school, these resources will definitely give us a jump start. Students will be thrilled to have the opportunity to check books out through our classroom library and take a sense of ownership.
