My students need more emergent reader books, crayons, and a cart in our classroom. Reading books aloud helps them use their imagination to create their own illustrations.
My students have already established a great love for reading. Every classroom needs a library filled with books that engage every type of reader.
Dr. Seuss said it best.
"The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go."
My young first graders are avid readers. They enjoy guiding their own reading by choosing books from my classroom library. Many of them do not have a wide selection of their own books at home so they love borrowing mine. I purchase books for my students throughout the school year but it's difficult to spend my own funds. Books last for a long time but eventually become torn, tattered and well used.
My students also enjoy being read to. The more books I share with them, the more they want to read on their own.
My Project
Books contain many words that children are unlikely to encounter frequently in spoken language. Children's books actually contain 50% more rare words than primetime television or even college students conversations. Reading aloud to young children is not only one of the best activities to stimulate language and cognitive skills; it also builds motivation, curiosity, and memory.
I am dedicated to making sure all children get what they need for early literacy development and success in school and life. I will focus my resources on making sure our youngest, most vulnerable citizens get what they need to start school prepared.
It's also important to teach students all of the components that come with reading a good book. We always discuss all aspects of a book and the students are often asked to illustrate what was read to them. One of the first school supplies I run out of are crayons. It's time to replenish!
I want each student in my room to feel like there's a special place just for them!
I strive to keep a wide variety of all book levels in my classroom library so that students never feel discouraged about reading.
