When an author steps into my classroom, life-long readers are born. My students have the opportunity to meet author Jay Asher as a way to kick off our new school year, and we need copies of his anti-bullying book, Thirteen Reasons Why to get us started on our life-long journey with books.
I teach in an alternative high school, a dropout prevention school, a turnaround school--and turning students around and getting them back on track for graduation is what we do best.
As a Language Arts teacher, one of the most lasting and powerful things I can do for my students is to lead them to a love of reading. Reading and literacy are necessary for success in both school and in life. Many of the students who step into my classroom claim they have never finished even one book on their own. Rarely is this the case when they finish my class. My own love of reading and language seems to be contagious. Though I may not be able to push them to reading 3-4 books per week like I do, I do all I can to at least nudge them in this direction.
My Project
Jay Asher, author of the anti-bullying book, Thirteen Reasons Why, has agreed to visit my school at the beginning of this upcoming school year. Already I have graduating students asking to come back for this event. In order to make this event a success, I need a classroom set of these novels to read with students before he arrives at our school. Thirteen Reasons Why carries a strong anti-bullying message that leaves a lasting impact on students. The book focuses on the dire consequences of our actions, and the ending message is clear--Be kind -try to live your life in a way that will never make others feel small. Each us of matters, and the things we do and say can change others' lives for better or worse. What a way to kick off a new school year of possibilities and opportunities.
Thank you so much for being a part of such an amazing school.
Our efforts make a huge difference in the lives of so many students. Reading and education saved my own life, and every year I watch the power of these things change my students' lives forever, too. Alternative education need not mean inferior education. With your help and generosity, we'll lay a literacy foundation that will last a lifetime. Thank you for making it possible for my students to read the book then meet the author.
