Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My third-grade students walk into our classroom every day full of excitement and enthusiasm. Third grade is an exhilarating experience for most children, but for my students, all of whom come from a high-poverty neighborhood, it is a chance to spend hours visiting and learning in a more positive environment.
Our literacy classroom is a sweet escape that gives these emerging students the chance to become explorers, critical thinkers, and authors.
As a teacher, it is my job to teach diverse groups of students who learn in very different ways. My students are always eager to learn something new. My goal is to help students become active in their education so that they can enjoy learning new ideas and concepts that they can take with them throughout their educational career.
I am determined not let the obstacles of minimal to no resources be discouraging!
My Project
As a literacy teacher, my students and I set individual goals using reading strategies that will help them to become better readers. Financial literacy is a very important part of my classroom. As the students are now emerging and growing, I teach using positive reinforcement. Each Monday, students are given a responsibility to manage their "money" which are small squares with certain amounts on them. Once a student earns ten dollars, they can access our classroom snack chest. Every week, there is a different dollar amount that students must manage carefully. I will use the checkbooks so that students can "write me a check" for each transaction and log it in their file.
I allow student book choice to build intrinsic motivation for reading and would love more financial reading and writing materials for my classroom.
The greater variety of books and resources that I have available in our classroom library helps to increases the opportunity to instill a love of reading in each student that passes through.
Classroom reading hands on comprehension journals and reading skill resources available to us would allow for student collaboration, discussion, and aid students' comprehension.
This resource would be a tremendous boost to our classroom, enriching our reading materials, and exposure to new material. I will continue to work hard to nurture their sense of community and teaching them to become responsible citizens.
