Our energetic second graders come from a rural area near the capital of our state. Students come from many different backgrounds and economic statuses. Over half of our students receive free or reduced lunch meals. We are a Title One school that has received numerous honors. We are a Palmetto's Finest School, National School of Character, Blue Ribbon Lighthouse School, and have received the title of Exemplary Writing School.
Despite many personal hardships, our students love school and find it to be a safe haven where they can learn through creative means.
Our school is a beacon in our community and a place of safety and excitement.
We try and provide as many life experiences and extra-curricular activities as we can. We expose our students to the arts through classroom integration, related arts, programs and performances, field studies, and artists in residences.
My Project
Research proves that children who have easy access to books over the summer will not regress in their reading fluency and accuracy. Reading 12 appropriate books that appeal to a child's interest over the summer decreases the chances that a child will have that typical summer slide that many students experience because of a lack of accessible books.
The materials requested in this project, just books, will make a difference in the lives of the second graders this project will benefit.
Because of the generous support, students will be able to choose books that appeal to their interests to take home and read freely over the summer. Reading and re-reading books that interest you is also proven to grow reading fluency and accuracy.
To be effective members of society that contribute to the community's vision, students must be fluent readers.
