"Every student can learn". My students are the most curious, literacy-driven elementary kiddos out there. They love learning new sight words, and reading books at their reading levels. They are apart of our district wide program for Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) students ranging from PreK-12th grade. Even though my classroom is of first graders, they have a large range of skills and needs. They all heavily rely on American Sign Language, and visual aids to communicate and learn new concepts.
Our small D/HH classroom in located in a mainstream elementary school, being one of two in the state of New Hampshire.
Everyday our classroom is filled with love, laughter, and lots of learning! With all different backgrounds, family life and interests, they all have different experiences to bring to our classroom. Their excitement for learning and literary is what keeps our classroom alive!
My Project
My students rely on visual materials for all parts of their academic day. There is not an accessible reading curriculum for my deaf students. Because of this, I often spend time creating my own reading materials that fit my student's needs. Guided reading is so important to master all aspects of reading. Having these materials will allow my students to have a library filled of adapted books they can enjoy at their level.
I am asking for a binding machine that will allow me to create more adaptive reading books for my deaf students.
These books will be laminated in order to keep durable for my first graders. In addition, I will create velcro question and answer component to check understanding, as well as, working on fine motor.
