"Hey, look! I can do it all by myself!" Five and six year olds LOVE to be independent and share their excitement about growing up. I want to foster that same eagerness about reading books!
I teach a group of 21 very enthusiastic kindergarten students who love story time!
They are so excited to notice patterns in the text of our big books and charts and to make connections to things they already know! They frequently chime in to help me read and ask to hear some stories again and again. My students are beginning to develop a love for reading and understand that books are a source of information and enjoyment!
My Project
We have started a classroom library work station to allow the children to have more time to interact with books. The books we currently have are great for retelling stories with the pictures or exploring non-fiction, but most of them have text that is too advanced for students to actually read at this point in the school year. I want the children to be actively engaged with books and feel successful with the print as well. My students need books with simple text. I would love to add books to our library that are rich in simple, rhyming text that allow children to play with language. I've also chosen some "just right" books for beginning readers with repetitive phrases to help to build confidence and fluency.
Giving my students access to these books will help keep them engaged in literature and give them the confidence that they CAN read.
Having success with printed language will help lay the foundation for being a life-long reader!
