My students need a Learning Easel, stacking stools, Carry Me Floor Cushions, Mini LED flashlights, exciting books, and many more items in order to create a calm, comfortable, and exciting reading environment!
Our room is filled with an abundance of different learners. Each and every student comes with a different set of strengths and weaknesses, however, each student comes eager and ready to learn each and every day.
There are 25 wonderful students, 13 boys and 12 girls.
Students come from a variety of different backgrounds. Our school is also a Title I school, which means the majority of our students receive free or reduced lunch. Our main goal is to find a joy in learning and coming to school each and every day!
My Project
In second grade, students are expected to participate in a 60 minute reader's workshop block. Each and every item I am asking for will be used to create an environment that makes reading fun, relaxing, interesting and enjoyable. For example, the easel will be used during our mini-lesson. During this time students participate in a whole group reading lesson. The lesson requires modeling from the teacher and the easel will help make modeling reading habits easier and more efficient. The stools will be used for guided reading time. During this time students work one on one or in small groups practicing their reading with the teacher (the stools will make this time not only interesting and beneficial, but enjoyable as well).
The cushions will be used for independent reading time.
During this time students are able to read around the classroom, the cushions will make this time more relaxing, comfortable, and enjoyable. The LED flashlights will also be used for independent reading time. Every Friday students participate in Flashlight Friday where students are able to read with flashlights (this is something the students LOVE). Unfortunately, we don't have enough flashlights for everyone, so this will finally give us enough! The books will be used in our classroom library. Students were asked which books they would appreciate the most in our classroom library, and Mr. Putter and Tabby, Henry and Mudge, and Poppleton were the ones students requested the most! Giving students a choice in what they want to read will only make them want to read more! And lastly, the hall passes will be used to create an easy, non-disruptive way for students to come and go during reading time.
