Our school in Charlottesville, Virginia is a wonderfully diverse place. We welcome families from all over the world and have over 30 different languages spoken by students at our school. It is also a low-income school with about 80% of our students qualifying for free or reduced-priced meals.
We are proud to work together as learners each day.
We want our students to honor diversity, to persevere when things feel difficult, and to understand their roles as citizens in our community now and for years to come.
My Project
My students and I need books about strong women. We need books about women in history that changed the world. We need books about modern day women making a difference. We need books about friendship and girls showing empathy. I am working with a carefully selected girls book club in upper elementary this year, and this is what we are studying.
Students will read about women like Malala Yousafzai, Sojourner Truth, and Serena Williams, as well as considering the character traits of strong female fictional characters like Dyamonde Daniel and Zita.
Through discussion and writing, students will reflect on the character traits each person exhibit and how those positive traits help them reach their goals. I am building an entire unit of study - one that will last several weeks - on this pattern of reading and reflecting on these female role models. My hope is that the girls in the group reflect on their own traits and that they find support and encouragement to reach for their own goals by reading the stories of other strong girls and women.
