My Students

The students that I am fortunate enough to work come from a range of socio-economic levels. This is a high poverty school where more than eighty percent of our students receive free or reduced lunch, our students often do not have books of their own to read. Our students enjoy the shared experience of reading books as a class, especially when they are a new twist on a classic. They come to English class with a thirst for knowledge and leave with a love of reading and literature.

My Project

Students often pick the same type of books. The goal is to not only challenge them in skill level and vocabulary but in the choice of reading materials as will. These books were picked to broaden the students horizons. They will journey through the virtual word, a utopian society and the trials and tribulations of the Great Depression and Immigration. These titles are on the Good Reads List and Battle of the Books. The sixth graders will be given the opportunity to explore these pieces of literature from front to back thus helping them improve their stamina while loving reading!
