This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My school is a Title I school where children of all economic levels are learning at high levels. We are readers, writers, historians, mathematicians, scientists, and problem solvers. My students are developing the skills needed to work, live, and play in the future.
Despite our differences in backgrounds, abilities, and interests, my students have developed caring and respectful relationships with one another.
You will often hear children chatting, laughing, and offering words of encouragement to each other. Students are encouraged to wonder, think critically, solve problems, ask questions, and seek answers.
My Project
I have a selected a variety of new, award winning books and authors that celebrate the diversity of my classroom. In addition, I chose age-appropriate novels written in verse. Novels in verse tend to appeal to a wide range of readers. Students enjoy the rhythm of the poetry and stories told through these novels.
My library is the heartbeat of our classroom and a reflection of our diversity.
Our library is where I overhear students talking about what they want to read next or recommending a book to a friend. It is where students step back into history, visit a faraway land, or laugh about the antics of their favorite character. Each year I try to add new books that will inspire my young students to read. It is essential that my students see themselves reflected in the books offered in our classroom.
This year my students will be participating in the Global Read Aloud. Each October my class participates in this project. It is an opportunity for my readers to connect with readers around the world through a shared read aloud. This year my 5th grade students will be listening to "Amal Unbound" and discussing the book in class while using a variety of tech tools to make connections with other classrooms.
