I've got 180 active dynamic and eager middle school kids in Spanish class.
The demographics at our school are rapidly changing; each year we get more and more kids of color, kids who are living in poverty, kids who have another language at home besides English.
Watching them light up as they improve in their ability to read, write, speak and listen to a new language is a thing to behold. Once the fire is lit, there is no stopping them.
My Project
This project will enable both my heritage speakers and my Spanish world language students to expand the choices available to them when they are reading.
Fun facts about bilingualism and biliteracy: People who can read and write in two languages:
- Are more likely to graduate
- Do better in school
- Earn more money
- Have more job opportunities
- Live healthier lives
A major indicator of reading success is having open access to a wide variety of types of reading materials. These magazines will be put to good use if I can get them into the hands of my eager learners! My students need opportunities to read authentic, motivating, leveled materials in Spanish.
