Ms. C. from Bronx NY is requesting Books through DonorsChoose, the #1 classroom funding site for teachers.

Read! Read! Read!

My students need books that are on their independent reading levels. They do not have the funds to buy their own books and many do not have any books at home.

  • $473 goal

Hooray! This project is fully funded

My Students

Several of my students have an unstable home life. They live in apartments with many other family members and cannot afford to buy books to keep at home. Every morning we read independently from 8:30AM to 9:00AM. It is difficult to complete this task with the lack of books within the classroom.

There is a wide range of needs to be met daily within my classroom, which is difficult most days.

Many of my students are ELL and English is their second language. Each of my students are unique in their own way and deserve the resources necessary in order to help them be successful in third grade. Watching a student's face light up because he or she can read a book is priceless. I want to be able to help my advanced readers keep moving forward while I continue to help my other students reach a third grade reading level. These materials will make such a positive impact on each student.

My Project

In my classroom now, I do not have many leveled books. For my advanced readers, I feel they may be discouraged because there are not many books at their level. With the books requested, their confidence and fluency will strengthen. Furthermore, my advanced readers have more of a variety, but I would like for them to read more nonfictional text to meet Common Core Standards. How would students use these books? Students have book bags they keep with them, and pick three books at their level to keep in their bags. This donation will not only give everyone a greater variety, but will allow students to buddy read when they probably couldn't before, because they were not able to read the books fluently.

Do you remember the first book you read on your own?

Do you remember the excitement and pride you felt? These donations will help me provide a way for all students to build their fluency and reading skills, because they will be reading books on their own levels. It will help them to build the confidence to read books independently and to grow as a reader!
