My students need a variety or reading books with levels from high kinder to 4th grade to enjoy throughout the school year.
Daily, my students go to our class library where they flip through some well-loved books in a search of adventures. Many of these students do not have the chance to buy new books so this is all they have. Slowly, the classroom library shrinks until I can come up with enough money to replenish it.
Students at the school I teach at come from a high-poverty neighborhood, and are predominantly Hispanic, Title 1 and English Language Learners.
My second grade students' reading levels range from Kinder to 4th grade. Parents enroll their children at this school because it is known to be a collaborative setting where the parents, teachers, administrators and students all work together to produce learners for life.
Our classroom library is in desperate need of new, interesting books for the students to dive into. The books I have are old, out of date and in limited quantity. Rebuilding our library would give my students the opportunity to travel to new places in their mind and make new friends in the characters.
This project means a lot to me personally because I have always been a life-long lover of books.
These days, students are enticed by TV, video games and computers and they quickly forget how wonderful books can be. Each book they pick up not only helps them to develop their imagination, but it helps them to develop the important skills they will need as they move through school and into college. They just need the opportunity and good books.
DonorsChoose makes it easy for anyone to help a classroom in need. Public school teachers from every corner of America create classroom project requests, and you can give any amount to the project that inspires you.
