This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I have a wonderful group of first grade students who love to learn new things! My students face many personal struggles, yet come to school every day motivated to learn. They know that our room is a safe, loving, and nurturing environment where we can have discussions, disagreements, and solve problems as a team.
All of my students plan to attend college and we discuss their personal goals regularly.
Some of my students desire to become pediatric nurses, computer programmers, and veterinarians. Others have set goals to become firefighters, wildlife biologists, and pediatricians.
My Project
As a first grade teacher, I have students in my class whose independent reading level ranges from PreK to second grade.
Having a leveled library would give my students the opportunity to read "on level" material which will help increase their reading accuracy and love for reading as well as develop their fluency and expression.
When I am conducting guided reading groups, one of the centers students rotate to is silent reading. Although I have a classroom library filled with books, very few of them are on a kindergarten or first grade reading level. These books would give my students a chance to feel successful as a reader and help build the confidence they will need to attack unknown words in more difficult texts.
