My students need engaging and interactive reading and math games to gain foundational skills in high-frequency words, addition, subtraction, ways to make 10, and order of operations.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our school serves K-5 who come from a variety of different economic backgrounds with over 90% of our students receiving free lunch. Our school is one of the roughest in Montgomery, AL ranging from shootings, fights, starvation, and a very high percentage of absences each year. Our students range from English and 40% Spanish learners. With our students coming in every day with barely anything and the same clothes worn, we are also one of the failing schools in our system. Our students are so technologically advanced but with the lack of technology that we have in our schools causes a halt with both teachers and students.
My Project
My students desperately need these games. This will be my first year teaching first grade and I have no games for first grade. These games have directions listed that are easy for the students to read and have pictures. They are also easy to put away and have the skill labeled for easy read. My students will be able to listen to sight words and the correct sounds as well as manipulate words into those sounds. They will also be able to computer different way to make addends up to 20. They will be also able to add and subtract fluently with an engaging fact fluency pop that will keep the learning ongoing. Students in primary grades have A VERY HARD TIME understanding words problems of how many more, recognizing totals, and identifying the wholes and parts in a word problem. The bar model allows students to master the strategy of how many more numbers it takes to reach another number. It allows them to visually see into two parts and how a whole represents the biggest number. My students and I would be greatly appreciated of this and I know that this would allow them to master skills that students lack in because of the lack of funding in our school.
