A typical day in our classroom starts with Reading Workshop. This is the time of day when students read, think, and jot. Reading workshop consist of mentor texts, read alouds, mini-lessons, anchor charts, turn and talks, independent reading and jotting, conferences, and goal setting.
My 4th grade students are readers and writers.
They are the ones who own their reading choices: what they read, where they read, and how they read. I am their guide on the side. Ultimately, my readers are the creators behind their reading lives. This means that they are engaged in books at their guided reading level, they are thinking about characters, settings, making predictions, inferences, and talking back to their book all while jotting their thinking on POST-it Notes as a record of this thinking and as a conversation starter during our conference time so that we can learn together and set reading goals to enhance our knowledge. It is a genuine, authentic, balanced approach to reading and writing.
My Project
I am requesting 4 packs of POST-it Notes, 1 case of filler notebook paper and 2 packs of flip-chart markers.
My students enter our room as CHAMPS each day. Settle into their book bags, pull out their books, POST-it Notes, and reading lives reading log. They immediately engage in reading, reflecting on our read alouds and classroom anchor charts to help them think while jotting about their books, their connections to the text, other texts, and the world around them. They then have a record of this thinking to share with book buddies and of course me.
This project and materials will improve the reading and writing lives of my students so that we can continue to create and reveal bright, eye-catching learning specific information and visuals on anchor charts using the right markers.
And, will allow students continued opportunities to be engaged, experienced, deliberate readers, thinkers, jotters with a never ending supply of POST-it Notes and paper to read-on, write-on, and reflect-on!
