Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach a diverse group of 8th graders in Language Arts at a middle school in a semi-rural community. My students come from diverse countries and backgrounds; this tapestry of different experiences and cultures makes our student body one that is interesting and charismatic. Many of my students also live in challenging economic conditions; nearly 70% of our students live at or below the poverty level. My 8th graders are hardworking, kind, and eager to learn; they have already shown a love for learning, and I want to provide them resources to enhance their learning experiences.
My Project
These high interest and higher Lexile books will engage my 8th grade learners who often have difficulty finding complex texts that are appropriate in content for middle school readers.
These books will be part of my classroom library and available to students to use for their independent reading.
Students are allowed to read their books in class and at home. These books will support our efforts to grow as readers who not only read complex texts, but who also read a diverse range of genres across cultures and time periods.
