Help me give my students a variety of books that will spark their interests in reading such as Harry Potter, the Ender Series, the Alchemist, and more.
Travis Bradberry once said that "grit is that extra something that separates the most successful people from the rest. It's the passion, perseverance, and stamina that we must channel in order to stick with our dreams until they become reality." My students have big dreams and big plans for themselves.
My group of students this year come from a plethora of backgrounds and situations and need support to help them reach their goals and dreams.
What makes them special is their capacity to care and ability to persevere through difficulties.
My students tend to be very reluctant readers. One commented, when handed a two page article, "do we really have to read ALL of this?" I want them to gain the desire to read. They are so smart and willing to learn about what is going on in the world, so I want them to become avid and lifelong readers.
My Project
Readicide: Systematic killing of the love of reading, often exacerbated by the inane, mind-numbing practices found in schools.
When I poll my students on those who love to read and those that don't, the results are disheartening for someone who loved reading growing up and still loves it to this day.
Many students dislike reading and I want to be a catalyst for change on that front. In his book, Readicide, Kelly Gallagher argues that schools contribute to students lack of desire to read by forcing students to read material that disinterests them or having students over dissect texts to the point where they hate reading. I want to help end this. One way is to provide Sustained Silent Reading time during the school day. Another is to provide a wide variety of great books for students to read. We need a variety of books that will spark their interests in reading such as Harry Potter, the Ender Series, the Alchemist, and more.
Ray Bradbury once said "you don't have to burn books to destroy culture, just get people to stop reading them". With the easy access to technology, i feel students have lost their desire to read print material. Research proves that this is the best way for students to retain information. This project will provide a wide variety of printed material to students. That way students can choose to be inspired by the journey taken in The Alchemist or swept away to Hogwarts in Harry Potter. They can learn about changemakers and sci fi fantasy. Your donation will ensure my students get into the "reading flow".
