Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Will you read me a story? Just one more! Listening to stories being read is a wonderful way to foster good readers and the love of reading. It helps students with comprehension, vocabulary, sequencing, fluency, and their imagination grows! Listening to books benefits ALL levels of emergent readers.
I am a Kindergarten teacher at a Title 1 school where over 95% receive free lunch.
The majority are ESL (English as Second Language) students and have either both parents working split shifts or are from single parent homes. Many do not have anyone to read to them and they CRAVE stories. Every morning, I am begged to read "just 1 more" before we move on to our lessons. (I ALWAYS give in because, when a child is so eager and desires reading and stories...FEED it! Then watch it grow!) My entire class of emergent readers is needing some independence with listening to stories, and that is where the Listening Center would benefit ALL of the class.
My Project
A listening center would allow the students to work independently, and therefore allows me the much needed time to work with small groups and even one-to-one with a student on individual needs. The center would be one that every child in the class could benefit from because, the books/cd's are of varying levels and appeal to all. Listening to stories helps with student comprehension, and with kindergartners, vocabulary is also a concern that needs to be a focus. The books and cd's I am asking for are filled with rich vocabulary, fun rhyming, and colorful adventures. The students can follow the words while listening and it gives them more opportunity to hear fluent readers. Children don't receive that 5 or 10 minutes of bedtime stories that so many of us had growing up, and although they are of different backgrounds, they all desire being read to daily.
With your donation, my students would get the opportunity to help themselves independently with their emerging skills of comprehension, vocabulary, sequencing, retelling, fluency, as well as feeding their imagination!
So many skills from something as simple as listening to stories on cd!
Please help our classroom in receiving materials for a listening center, so we can nurture our growing readers into successful students. Thank you!
