Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
When you walk onto the campus of our school, you notice something very different. It’s actually quite beautiful. You see students of all ethnic groups playing and enjoying one another. Many are European, African, Hispanic, Muslim, and Arabic, to name a few. They come here to learn together. They all want to be here, but some of them are missing some of the skills that they need to be good readers.
Twenty-five percent of our students are not meeting benchmark in reading!
I run the Learning Center that many of these students attend daily to help meet the rigorous California Core Standards. There are many reasons why this is happening. Some students do not have the support they need at home. It could be because their parents don’t speak English. They may also not have the materials at home that other students use to practice the skills taught. They may be exhausted from the long trip they take daily to get to school. I am so lucky that I get to work with and support them as they become better readers.
My Project
Do you remember being read to as a child? I do! One of the first stages of learning to read is listening to others read. Many of the students that attend the Learning Center don't have people to read to them. Our school purchased a wonderful computer program. The students can read texts at their just right levels. The 1st read of the book is read aloud to them. Also, if they need assistance with a word they can tap a button, and it will say the words for them.
Unfortunately, without head phones they can't hear the text being read to them.
This element missing diminishes the effect of the program. Please help us by donating as much as you can to be able to purchase nice headphones that are easy to clean and maintain with over 100 students per day using them.
