My Students
This is a co-taught English classroom of twelve amazing and resilient students who are some of the hardest working kids in our school. All of them face challenges with reading and writing, but all of them are more than willing to do what it takes to improve their skills!
Books that are high interest and level appropriate are desperately needed for this group of students, none of whom currently read at high school level.
My co-teacher and I have brainstormed numerous books, most of which are not part of our current curriculum, that we feel would help push our kids into literacy.
My Project
Our kids love to read, but get easily frustrated by material out of their reach. They are equally frustrated (and embarrassed) by books that are too young for them or have characters that are clearly intended to connect to a younger audience.
My co-teacher, Amanda, and I think adding Karen Hesse's Out of the Dust and Time Magazine to our curriculum will provide the high interest material we so badly need.
Creating a rich and supportive environment for our struggling students is paramount to their literacy and success. Our goal is to help these students become proficient readers by the end of the year!
