My Students

"Are you going to be a pioneer or a settler?" is a question that was asked by our new elementary principal who has since moved on to be our school superintendent. That comment was in response to being introduced to Project Based Learning. As a class, we are trying to not be settlers.

My third-grade students are motivated to learn new things and are excited to be able to do things using technology in the classroom.

Our school is a PreK-12 grade school in four buildings with two being Hutterite Colonies. The population is around 400 students. The student population at our school is not very diverse, but students of different ethnicities are gladly accepted and strong friendships are developed. One of our goals as a school is to empower our students to become problem solvers using creative and critical thinking 21st Century Skills.

My Project

As an elementary teacher, I need to help students become fluent readers who are able to comprehend what they are reading. One of their favorite times during the day is when they can take a book to a favorite spot, sit and read. They are also given time to listen to another reader and talk about what they read or heard.

I want my students to listen to stories as well as record themselves to improve their fluency and thus their comprehension.

There are many diverse needs and levels of readers within my classroom. I am working on gathering passages and books with QR codes that can be scanned and listened to. It has been shown students who listen to fluent readers, many times begin to become more fluent themselves. I also want my students to be able to listen to themselves and hear the difference practicing can make. This iPad will allow my students to accomplish all of these things.
