Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you have a favorite book? Do you remember your favorite book you read in elementary school? For a lot of us, we have good memories of reading a favorite book or finding a new series that we can't wait to finish. My students live in an area where they often don't have access to their public library, and if they do get to go, they find that their favorite book has been checked out already. This often happens even at their school library. My students generate a wish list of books that I use to guide my purchase choices. This way students are continually finding books in the classroom library that they themselves have chosen. This year it has been especially important to have a classroom library.
When students can't find a book that interests them, they get discouraged and decide not to read.
Reading books helps us in school, but it also takes us away from the trials and tribulations of our normal lives. My students often have stress from their different and sometimes difficult home lives. It is important for them to find an escape at times. A good book can do that! Students will be able to read these books at school as well as take them home. I want to obtain books for my classroom library that are of high interest and current. To keep current, I have to continue to buy books regularly that students request. Often I spend several hundred dollars out of my own pocket to make sure my students stay interested in reading.
I am asking for some much-appreciated assistance to help me keep my students interested in reading as well as strengthen their minds. Thank you!
