Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My diverse classroom is composed primarily of English Language Learners in a high poverty area. My students come from different academic, linguistic, and sociocultural backgrounds. They are eager learners who need time, understanding, and a friendly environment that gives them the security and opportunity to discover themselves and their world.
Most of my students start 2nd Grade without knowing how to read or write.
Our school does not have a library, so it is in the classroom that students have the opportunity to read and listen to stories, to learn about their world and to discover how much they can do for the future.
My Project
Reading books, reflecting on the text, and writing about their findings is part of my students' daily routine. We read fiction and nonfiction books every day; then we discuss about them, work on research projects, write facts, share opinions, and collaborate in different activities. I try to create different opportunities to address all the needs of students, so even children who work below grade level have access to grade 2 curriculum in a meaningful and engaging way.
We need a new reading table because the one we have is wobbly and becomes a big distraction for students during guided reading instruction.
Guided reading is an instructional approach that involves the teacher working with a small group of students. It is an essential part of the day because supports struggling readers providing them with scaffolding strategies which facilitate their reading success. In this scenario, anything that diverts students from concentrating and paying attention can impair their learning.
I also included a number of books to this project. These are books who teach students how to become better citizens. Students should become better people while they become better readers. Most of my students have no access to print except for the classroom. Reading about admirable people might inspire children to also make a difference. Young students should be exposed to stories that teach important life lessons and give them the courage and knowledge to create a better future. Read, learn, change the world!
