Nonfiction Books Needed for Engaging Expert Projects!
My students need a collection of nonfiction books about several wide-ranging topics so they can do research and learn about the world around them.
Do you remember the first time you got excited learning about and researching a fascinating topic? I want to foster a love for reading nonfiction in my students, but I need more nonfiction books to fill my library shelves!
I teach a diverse group of 4th graders in California who come from a wide range of socioeconomic, linguistic, and cultural backgrounds--50% are English learners and over a third come from low-income homes.
My class loves to read. My students especially love to read nonfiction texts about animals, space, and science. However, I do not have enough books in my classroom library to meet the range of reading needs of my students.
I plan to teach a nonfiction reading research unit where students will work in teams to read, take notes, and research about an animal that fascinates them. They will become experts about their chosen animal and will present their learning to the class. I am requesting a collection of nonfiction books for our class.
My Project
Giving my students access to nonfiction materials will allow them to grow as readers. This will provide them with opportunities to read a genre that may be unfamiliar to them and hopefully they will come to love.
As our world becomes more complex it is important that students are able to gather, read and make sense of the world around them.
Learning to organize and present nonfiction material in a meaningful way is a life-long skill. Students who become adept and confident in their ability to learn and share information will excel academically.
Thank you for this opportunity to enrich my students' lives.
