Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My classroom is a colorful mix of economic classes, a treasure trove of stories and talents and a diverse collection of intellectual abilities. Conversations run the gamut from soccer, football, or basketball scores, to what happened in the latest episode of Riverdale and why Lil Tecca is a better (hotter) singer/band than My Chemical Romance. The walls are covered with standards that we are working on, drawings of superheroes, flowers, and caricatures of different sorts.
Walk into my classroom any day and you will find enthusiastic learners.
You might see one kid with a book, trying to sneak in a few more minutes of reading because "I can't help it. I'm at the best part!" However, quite a few might cringe at the thought of reading and speaking in non-social situations. It is not unusual for me to ask a student to explain their answer in their native language and ask another student to interpret it for me or we use Google Translate (thank goodness for Google Translate).
My Project
I have asked for sound cancelling headphones that also have microphones attached to them. If my students had these they would be able to read a passage, record their voice, and then listen to how they read.
This will improve their pronunciation, phonic awareness, and prepare my English Language Learners for their WIDA tests at the end of the year.
They will also use it on Flipgrid, an app that allows my students to record themselves reading a passage, and then can submit their recording to me. Their peers or teacher can then go and make comments on their reading. I can assess their words per minute, fluency, and accuracy. This all coincides with our school goal for the year, that 65% of all students will achieve 3 star growth on Acadience.
