Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The elementary students I serve attend a Title 1 (100% Free & Reduced Lunch) school in Las Vegas, NV. Each day they work hard to overcome the obstacles that present from a wide range of learning disabilities coupled with learning English as a second language.
Smiles, best effort, and a growth mindset allows our resource time to be productive each day.
Our time spent together is not difficult as these students want to learn and support each other all the time. Words of encouragement and celebrations are not uncommon. We work on closing academic skill gaps in reading, math, and writing using multi-sensory learning strategies. Each day is a new adventure in our amazing classroom.
My Project
Students need to have access to poetry books and creative writings from great authors like Shel Silverstein, Roald Dahl, and William Shakespeare to provide mentor text examples of "good writing" with rich vocabulary. Reading these vocabulary "mentors" enables my students to build their vocabulary skills furthering their development of strong written expression skills.
Access to writings with rich vocabulary and useful technology, Chromebooks, a student's opportunity to create a piece of original, grade level writing increases.
Use of Chromebooks allows for a collaborative editing process between the student and the teacher. This editing process (revisions after feedback sessions) also allows for growth in critical thinking and evaluation skills, both of which are needed in the workforce today.
When given the technology to "write it" and the books of poetry to "read it" ELL students with learning disabilities have a significant opportunity to close academic gaps while growing self-confidence in their ability to succeed.
