My Students

I have 106 ninth grade students, half of whom "hate to read," and many will tell you that they don't even like to hold a book! One big reason for students not liking books is that they are required to read text digitally. Reading text digitally has created a negative consequence for students' ability to slow down to comprehend what they are reading. The scrolling and the skimming has resulted in shallow reading. To change this "learned" predisposition, I KNOW I have to get the very best books into my students' hands and provide them time IN CLASS to read and be able to talk about them - Book Clubs! (Old idea...I know.)

Another common reason for students "hating to read" is because they continually choose books at the wrong reading level; they don’t want to be seen holding book that nobody else is reading.

My Project

My plan has been to provide my students with independent reading time at the beginning of class for the first twenty minutes everyday, Monday - Thursday, and allowing my students to meet with their Book Clubs on Friday. They LOVE Fridays to meet and talk about their books! I have even connected my classes. For example, my students reading a book in Period 1 share the same Google Doc with students reading the same book in Period 5. Each week, I place interesting discussion questions in each of their book clubs' shared Google Docs with a video clip (e.g. A video clip of rafters navigating Westwater from Will Hobb's novel Down River or a National Geographic video of Antarctica for the novel Shipwreck at the Bottom of the World by Jennifer Armstrong). Each week, my students look forward to reading the answers to the same questions that the other book clubs answered as well as their reflections on the video.

Most importantly, my students are in desperate need of a wider variety of high-interest books; our library can provide one or two books of the same title but never four or five.

Research shows that students need a total of ninety minutes per day of reading (across all classes) to improve their reading. Unfortunately, most teachers struggle with how to incorporate and organize independent student reading into their classes - I have figure it out! But, the hardest part is providing the variety of books. Thank you in advance for helping me make our classroom better. Thank you.
