My class is full of creative, energetic, hard-working students. They love reading books, cracking jokes, coloring pictures, making art projects, and learning new things. They are very curious and are constantly asking questions.
As a special education teacher, most of my students are below grade level and are working hard to catch up to their peers.
Our Title I school has more than eighty percent of our population receiving free or reduced-price lunch. More than half of our students are English language learners. It's important to give these students a quality education early, to instill a love of learning while they are still young.
School should be a place where students feel safe and are able to gain skills and knowledge that will help them be successful in future careers. I strive to give them as many opportunities to learn these things as I can.
My Project
One of my goals in teaching is to help my students love reading. The words that I love hearing most are "Can I keep reading instead?". Almost every student that I work with is reading below grade level and many of those students are still working on learning basic phonics rules and memorizing their sight words. They are often frustrated because they understand that they are behind and that most students have mastered these skills by now.
These games will help students learn the basics of reading while creating a positive, engaging learning environment.
