Help me give my students an enjoyable reading experience by introducing them to a variety of authors while crafting deeper meaning into an array of topics.
Have you ever had a moment of realization where you can say to yourself, "This is why I chose to do this."? I can honestly say that I have had this experience with my second graders this year. They make me want to be the best and most effective teacher that I can possibly be.
The students at my school are kind, compassionate, and enthusiastic learners.
A vast majority of my students come from low-socioeconomic backgrounds. We are a Title I school located in a very rural community. I have the privilege of being more than just a teacher to these sweet children--I am also someone they can come to when they need a cheerleader to encourage them to keep trying when its hard or even when they just need a hug. My kids deserve the best (and most engaging) education possible, and that is why I am enlisting the help of DonorsChoose.
My Project
Shared reading is a collaborative learning activity, based on research that emulates and builds from a child's experience with bedtime stories. In our classroom, shared reading looks like my students and I sitting together and rereading in unison carefully selected texts.
One of the main purposes of shared reading is to teach children systematically and explicitly how to become good readers and writers themselves.
One of the books I've chosen, "Martin Luther King Jr. and the March on Washington" will give students a hands-on learning experience about what it means to fight for a cause! "Everybody Cooks Rice" and "A Picture Book of Cesar Chavez" will increase understanding about the important topic of immigration.
