Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school is located in Garden Grove, California in a low-income community. Students come from many diverse backgrounds and cultures though they all bring something special to the school. A majority of the students are English Language Learners and about 90% of the students who attend receive free or a reduced rate lunch.
In my fifth grade classroom, I strive to create an inclusive classroom community, allowing for the students to feel safe, accepted and part of a team.
I know students learn best when given the opportunity for hands on activities. Getting resources that allow them to do so will motivate them to work hard in all areas of their educational day.
My Project
When we all have the same novel we all can succeed and learn. My class deserves to read a complete book together. to do this we need a copy for each student. When I have done this with other books, it has hooked all my readers from the top students to the struggling readers.
When we all have the same book we have the opportunity to break up from whole group, to individual, and small group reading.
By doing this reading becomes exciting to the students and they begin to beg for reading time. There is nothing more rewarding for a teacher to see the power of a good book. With this reading power comes strong discussions and better writing.
My hope that when you read this you understand how hard it is to get 5th grade students interested in reading when everything this generation is exposed to is hooked to an electronic devise. This type of reading brings out the curiosity and imagination of the students.
