Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our district serves many low income families living in impoverished rural area. I am trying to provide a strong foundation in reading for my students. Many of my bilingual students are fluent in reading while others are extremely limited and tend to struggle more than others. I have to be creative and come up with many ideas to motivate my students to read in and out of the classroom. "We need a cool area to read like the other classes!" my students say. I want to provide them with as much exposure to literature as possible and an exciting area for them to enjoy reading, so they may be life long learners. This, in turn, will help our students be more literate and fluent when speaking. There are many standards required by the state that my students want to be successful at. We have set personal goals to meet those requirements both in reading and math. I know with this new item in my class, it will help create life long learners and motivate my students to love reading.
My Project
This project is meant to help the students in my classroom who struggle with reading. The bench is a motivator to take reading to another level. These students struggle with reading and writing. I will place books with high interest and different genres in baskets. They are not motivated to read for enjoyment! I strongly believe the more contact they have with books, the better readers they will become. They currently read to learn and don't enjoy reading at their desk. This will be fun for the students and has already been a motivator for them. They are the ones that suggested this idea of having a quiet and comfortable area for reading. The bench is a reward for positive behavior. Our students are bilingual and come from low income families. Books are scarce and not a normal daily source. I try to provide for my children to make a safe and creative environment where the students can learn and enjoy learning.
