Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are so lucky to have students from all over the world attend our school. This diversity in cultures and religions create unique learning experiences for our students. We want to build on these experiences and encourage even stronger relationships between our students. In order to continue building a community throughout the school, we are searching for a common thread that will connect all classrooms.
The 2200+ students in our middle school come from a variety of backgrounds.
Students participate in a variety of clubs and extracurricular activities from the arts to sports to community outreach and STEM clubs. Even though we are a big school, we want to make sure every student finds something to inspire their passions.
My Project
This year, I'm teaming up with our media specialist, Mrs. Farmer, to encourage our entire school community to read and discuss the same novel. A community novel should be read by all stakeholders, so our wish is that all teachers, staff, administrators, and parents will also read this story and have open discussions with our students about the novel.
The Red Bandanna by Tom Rinaldi will not only serve to educate our students about a historical day in our country, 9/11, but it is also an incredible story of a true hero.
After months of reading a variety of middle school YA fiction and nonfiction novels, we chose this novel because we feel it will be an inspiration to our students.
Our PTA generously donated 300+ copies of the novel so that each teacher in our school can have 3 copies of the novel to check out to students. In order to support the initiative further, we want to use these bandannas as incentive for the first 480 students who read and review the novel. We hope they will display the bandannas on their backpacks to support Welles Crowther's legacy and inspire their peers, teachers, and school community to read this amazing story.
